Journal de la Medina
جريدة المدينة
Founded in 2015, JDLM is an urban collective and trilingual publishing project that explores the different layers between urban space and social body in the city of Tunis. JDLM's publications and activities aim to amplify diverse personal and collective experiences of a shared urban environment through practices such as creative writing, experimental translation, illustration and typography.
Our city is not built for the youth, the elderly, the poor, the students, the handicapped, or the visually impaired. Contemporary Tunis is not built for the human being. This fuels perceptions of marginalization, government resentment and a lacking sense of collective ownership of public space. At times it encapsulates an industry-fueled human resource factory, a place designed in such a way that minimizes people's feeling of freedom and community in favor of profit, where scenes of hustle and bustle overpower slower moments.
JDLM can be considered an urban commons, a triangle braided together by a group of people ranging from writers to skaters, who come together to dream, discuss, wander and create in their shared urban environment. This platform is a converging point of collective wonder and impressions which radiate out of our footsteps when we become entangled in the city's many rhythms.
Journal de la Medina is the manifestation of our collective dream of a more inclusive, connecting and caring urban environment.
Inverting the Funnel
One of the most important ways to strengthen shared purpose and values is by ritualizing togetherness - meeting regularly, sharing deeply, cooking together, celebrating successes, candidly assessing failures. This is essential to building a culture of commoning and a shared identity (From Free, fair, and alive, 2019.)
